Tomorrow begins American Heart Month! We wanted to kick things off a little early with information about heart attacks that could save your life or the life of someone you care about.

Did you know heart attacks have beginnings? They do! Just like other diseases, heart attacks have early signs and symptoms. These “beginnings” occur in more than 50 percent of patients, according to the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care. If recognized in time, these beginnings can be treated before damage occurs.

Early signs and symptoms include:

  • A feeling of fullness
  • Pain that travels down one or both arms
  • Jaw pain
  • Excessive fatigue
  • Anxiety
  • Nausea
  • Back pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pressure, squeezing, aching or burning

You may experience any or all of these symptoms. When they first start, they can be mild and may come and go. Over time, the symptoms and pain increase until the victim collapses.

If you experience any of these early signs and symptoms ... listen to your body! Call 9-1-1 and get to the nearest emergency department.
